History did prove Moon RIGHT. No doubt about it.

The Dome holds the NBA record for attendance, 26,511 paying customers having watched the Jazz play Los Angeles last November. The basketball court is set up in one corner of the immense floor, and viewing a game from the upper reaches is like watching 10 men play cards at a small table at the far end of a 747 hangar.

About what? Giving a no bid, sweet-heart contract to his political crony Sherman Copeland?
McKeithen and Dixon were the ones responsible for and right about the dome.

this year's big seller in the Dome is a 40-ounce $2.25 cup of Superbeer—3? cans' worth.
man that sure beats $8.50 beer

Whether the Dome can weather its superproblems and become the true building of the future for professional sports remains to be seen. As one stands in the smallish locker rooms—all olive drab and steel furniture, resembling an army delousing station—one understands how much remains to be done. It is hard to avoid shuddering when Moon Landrieu declares he'd do it all over again. "History, I'm sure, will prove me right," says the mayor.
looks like it did. SI should do a follow up

$2.25 back then comes out to about $9 now. Inflation is a bitch...

My buddy was telling me the other day about how his uncle attended he grand opening celebration for the super dome where the Allman Brothers played. Can't even imagine how fun that wouldve been.

My main memories of the early Dome days:
SSI was a huge cluster F...much like Sherman Copelin.
Often times, the main entertainment in Saints games was watching paper airplanes sailing from all corners of the stadium.
If I had a couple of dollars for every time that the scoreboard malfunctioned, I could have retired long ago.
Early concerts in the Dome had some great lineups but the sound was often horrific.
For all of the criticism that I've given Tom Benson over the years, even on his worst days, he was a huge step up from John Mecom. As the article shows, Mecom's choice for an exectutive vice president was Dick Gordon. His vast football experience? Being a former Apollo astronaut.
Given all of this, if the worst thing that we can say for the Dome nearly 40 years later is a power outage during the SB, it's come a long way, indeed.

Great post. 22 lawsuits? That's insane.

Well, not entirely --
quote:
In an effort to involve the city's black community, Mayor Landrieu appointed Sherman Copelin, a local black leader, to head Superdome Services, Inc., a corporation that would provide housekeeping, ticket sellers, security and ushers for the Dome. Ill-managed at first, the SSI staff persistently ignored the advice of its own subcontractors. It left the Dome dirty after some events and did not hire ushers until it was too late to orientate them, so that on opening day the Dome was a sea of lost patrons and staff wandering the seemingly endless corridors. But the SSI situation also seems to be improving.
Is Sherman Copelin still in jail???
I mean, seriously, he couldn't have picked a more crooked scumbag if he tried. I wonder what was Moon's take from that deal and if Katrina Mary and Mitch the Dick are still living off that money.
On another note, that building has paid for itself 100x's over. And, unlike most of the stadiums built during that era, it's still looks modern and can match any non-retractable dome in style and convenience.
