Not that this situation is AT ALL your fault, but I'll never understand why people have an issue like this and never ask anyone. If I was in a restaurant waiting to see a server and one never came, I'd go back up and ask the hostess if she let the server for that section know we were there/if she could go get her. I'd even possibly stop another server. If I was still ignored, then I would leave, but I don't think I'd leave without alerting someone as to why.
I agree with this. Somebody else said something about it's "my job to be waited on." It's also my time. I've decided to choose a restaurant and invest a certain amount of time to get there. Leaving and going somewhere else is going to cost me about 20 more minutes to a half hour of my day to pick up and leave, relocate, be seated and start the whole process over again (more if you decide to go eat a long way from Essen Lane).
Much easier to grab a hostess, tell them you've been ignored and it usually gets corrected. Chances are, you'll get an apologetic waiter who f'ed up and will try to make up for it. If not, tips should reflect the level of service (and you should start subtracting from the initial service slight). That five-dollar tip for the $30 check becomes a buck, or nothing if the service continutes to be that bad.
I learned long ago that getting up and leaving is not really a smart option, especially if you are just going to relocate to another chain where you can expect some level of more bad service.
