I still like TOS the best, despite the overall poor production values (at least by today's standards), and occasionally hokey script, "Spock's Brain" - but, even when they had poor material, like the aforementioned "Spock's Brain" and "Spectre of the Gun" (they had about a $500 budget for the episodes - it was supposed to be a full on western town), the characters shined through.

Spectre of the Gun and The Empath are two of my favorite 3rd season episodes. The budget cuts hurt the season overall, but in these cases, they got creative with the lack of money and I like the stylized feel of the episodes.

They made lemonade. That's how I judge things.

Abrams is not my cup of tea, but I put him in the same category as Michael Bay and others in the "big budget" Hollywood mold - take away their money, they're impotent.

On the other hand, give the Coens, Whedon, or Nolan a small budget and a green light - you'll still get an excellent movie. Just my opinion.

Spectre of the Gun

I actually have a foldout poster from this episode framed on my wall at work.

It's the shot on the cover of this...and that's actually what it is from.
