Actually, none of that was going on. When some people see a special interest/arthouse type movie that they don't get or maybe that they do get and don't like the message, they call it pretentious. I've heard people call Kubrick's FILMS pretentious. I've also heard people say Lynch's Eraserhead is pretentious. Pretentious? No. Not for you? Yes.
