DALLAS—American Airlines and US Airways will merge and create the world's biggest airline. The boards of both companies approved the merger late Wednesday, according to three people close to the situation.
The carrier keeps the American Airlines name but will be run by US Airways CEO Doug Parker. American's CEO, Tom Horton, will become chairman of the new company, these people said. They requested anonymity because the merger negotiations were private.

My only question is which mileage club will they belong to?

With their powers combined, imagine how truly horrible of service they can provide!

No idea. I have both One World and Star Alliance miles (I should probably stick to one). When Continental and United merged, my frequent flyer miles from Continental were transferred to United's program.
Also I read that in addition to keeping the American Airlines name, the new airline will be head quartered in American's hometown of Fortworth, Texas. The DFW area will probably see a influx of more jobs as a result as they consolidate their operations.

scary. I was pissed when Continental merged with United. Continental was one of the few domestic airlines with good service left. Expect more of the same with this merger...

I have miles with three carries: delta, united, and qantas. Qantas is one world so they are aligned with American. I have nearly 200,000 points with qantas so it's pretty important.

Do y'all think that this will affect any other airline stocks? I currently own Southwest.

saw this on news last night.
i live in DFW and they said even though US Air is technically buying them out of debt, AA will keep the branding and name and US air will go away.
Dallas will remain the world headquarters for the airline and basically it will just double in size.
Said all US Air rewards will just merge over and combine with AA miles

I would guess it won't be for another 1.5 - 2 years though

Long rumored. And now down to three US Legacy Carriers.
PHX is the only airport in any real jeopardy of losing their hub. CLT will keep the SE/Atlantic ops but lose the Caribbean flights. ORD, DFW, MIA, JFK, and LAX will all remain.
ETA: I forgot about PHL...they're done too.

They'll still be a "focus city" but there is no reason for the joined airline to have a hub in PHL and JFK.
JFK will assume all of the combine airline's trans-atlantic flights and PHL will keep the regional flights from the Northeast due to landing restrictions at JFK.
