Traveling (flying) with a gun.

I know I could just as easily google this shite but I figure someone on here might learn something as well.
I made sure to get a TSA approved case. I know it has to have at least 2 locks.
My dad said its only an additional $30 to bring. Is this true?
Also, can you put ammo in the case with your gun or does it have to fly separate? If so, about how much for that?

I checked one on accident one time in a golf bag. I couldn't believe it made it through security.

I don't think ammo can fly at all.

KR fails to mention it was during the 60's.

Pretty sure ammo has to be in a separate bag, you can put it with your clothes if you want. You will have to check it as luggage, and most airlines charge around $25 dollars per item.
Eta: check your gun as luggage not ammo.

Ammo has to stay seperate from the gun. Don't remember any charge, but I could be mistaken.

Puddle jumpers don't count!

Spend the money on a good case. I finally bought a pelican after 2 other brands didn't have a long life. Also I use good master locks I don't mess with the TSA crap. I have been with guys that have had there TSA locks cut off when they are suppose to have keys for them. I travel with firearms 3-4 times a year and since switching to a pelican case I have not had a issue. Knock on wood.

I stand corrected on the "ammo can't fly at all", at least it is not prohibited by TSA:
Small arms ammunition, including ammunition up to .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge- Check with your airline or travel agent to see if ammunition is permitted in checked baggage on the airline you are flying. Small arms ammunitions for personal use must be securely packaged in fiber, wood or metal boxes or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition. Ask about limitations or fees, if any, that apply.
So, it varies from airline to airline as to whether it is permitted in checked baggage - TSA says no to carry-on, and subject to the above rule.

I recently checked two shot guns and ammo with no problems or extra charges. This was a couple months ago
Twice actually. There and back and another trip I flew home with a few boxes of ammo

The luggage has to be a hard case that locks, no soft suitcases. Gun and ammo must be in hard containers separate from one another. They can be in the same suitcase. That is the law, individual airlines might have other regs.

Just make sure to not have an empty magazine in your carry on. Watched a TSA agent confiscate an empty M-9 mag from an Army LT in uniform headed overseas because she forgot it was in her bag.

I got a brand spanking new knife taken the other day. I used my hiking bag as a carry on and forgot it in there. It was only a $20 knife but still. It went on one hike and was never used. Might as well have ripped up a $20 bill.

Thanks for the solid info guys. I'll have to check and see what they say about carrying it my check in luggage. Pops said that it ha to be a metal container. I might just ship it with him in his ammo case an get it later. I'll call the airline to find out. Just some boxes of .22s an some 12 guage buckshot slugs.
I didn't know if they actually had to be in a metal container of if he was just saying that bc he has his. He's like that.

This past year my coworkers wife went to bring her mother to the airport. She is Slovakian and her mother is very old and didn't speak English well so she escorted her in the airport.
Well, they found her 38 in her purse and needless to say made a huge deal. Wanted to take her CC away and charge her 10-15k.
Luckily she got out of it with a much smaller fine but damn. Terrorist won.

I know a guy that had to fly for a business trip a few weeks after 9/11. Some of his buddies put a cardboard cut-out of a pistol wrapped in aluminum foil in his bag without him knowing it. The people at the airport were not amused . He was delayed about an hour and missed his flight.
