West Wing Season 5: Plenty of Spoilers

so, after watching the first episode of season 5, i was pretty disappointed. something wasnt the same. and then i read all about sorkins split with the network/show following season 4.
i like sorkin, dont LOVE him, but i gotta say, a few more episodes into season 5 and im crushed. it all feels like a lame reproduction of the west wing. the spark seems to have left with sorkin. i still like these characters, but three more seasons is a commitment.
does it get any better? do the new writers get into the swing of things later on down the line? should i keep watching, or is it all down hill from here?

It never got any worse for me. I enjoy 5-7 just as much as 1-4. The biggest thing that sucked was having Rob Lowe leave the show. His character was awesome.

I think 5 is the low point in the show. It picks back up for 6 and 7.

Seriously. What the hell? And they never even mention him again, like he dropped off the earth. For chrissakes, he's good friends with Josh and the Pres. campaigned for him. We don't even know what happened in his campaign! Total horseshite. Worst part of the show. That and Zoey's terrible arse French boyfriend.

I still love the entire series, but there is a noticeable difference (which one would expect when the guy who ran ER takes over a show about the White House...) between 1-4 and 5-7.
****SPOILERS****
The only real thing I have a minor quibble with is what they did with Leo after CJ became so popular. They had nothing to do with him, and showed it...he did nothing.

S7 has some redemption in the back half, but Seasons 5-6 are a pretty noticeable dip in quality. And they gut the character of Toby. Just gutted him.

So much for no spoilers.

I liked season 7. The campaign was pretty well done IMO.

this is what is really bothering me right now, and i know what 7 is about and would love to get to it, but 5 is so bland im just putting on episodes in the background when i clean.
********SPOLIERS*************
and i hated how they handled the zoey bartlet storyline, especially when they recover her. there wasnt any real buildup or explanation when they found her, and the rescue happened within 5 mins of episode time. it was so lame.
*********SPOILERS**************
all the humor seems gone, the wit is missing, and its really dragging everything down. even some of the historical references are pedestrian and not nearly as interesting as 1-4. sorkin may be a coked out ahole, but he can write and is pretty fn smart.

I have a buddy who is watching for the first time, and just the other day I get a text that says, "Toby Ziegler is a douche-bag" I say, "Just wait till season 6/7". He responds, "That's where I am."
They took the season 2 righteousness and flipped it into some sort of crusader against his own job. Season 2 Toby would never have done what he did, IMHO.
