Actually the BOS gave Mac the option of longer contract if he fired certain assistants or two years, be the president of the American Football Coaches Association and them retire. The options were brought to him while he awaited outside in his car. When given the options, out of loyalty to his assistants, he told the messenger to tell the board that he would take the two year deal. He was hoping that his last recruiting class would pan out andet him keep his job beyond the two years It didn't work. Carl Maddox, a Mac supporter, had retired as AD. He was former Jim Corbett's successor. The BOS had
specifically hired Paul Dietzel to fire him, and would fire him
only a few years later. They then hired Bob Bordbead to can
Jerry Stovall. The biggest problem with LSU football at that time was the meddling by the BOS, including some women who didn't even have a clue in hell what a football was. It was a novelty to them.
