The difference is when you buy stock you are now invested in the company and have a stake. The money from the IPO is invested by the company in some projects to help it grow.
What you are defending is a complete bastardization of copyright law. Copyright law was designed to enable people that actually create something to profit from that creation. Copyright and patent trolls, which this guy is are a drain on the economy. While the NFL is also guilty of abusing the spirit of the law, this guy did nothing to create value.
This is a good example of why we need to re think, if not abolish most IP laws.
