The passive talent system is intimidating as all hell. Read the forums for whatever class you pick for build suggestions.
The classes can pretty much all be specd however, so, you can make a magic dmg ranger, or a melee dmg witch if you want to. its all about how you spend your points.

fair warning to all:
mervil(last boss of Act 1) is a bitch
Make sure you have cold resist items and nothing that makes your weapons do cold damage.
