It's not like they went and swung for the fence on that hire it just worked out incredibly well.
I agree. But to say that LSU should just "accept" that they will never be a consistently good program is ridiculous. All it takes is finding the right guy. It doesn't matter whether that guys is an established big time coach, or a former assistant that exceeds everyone's expectations

Yeah JOB has obviously struggled this year without another strong post presence but Magnum couldn't do anything with two NBA players helping him in the post.

It may take JJ 5 years to lsu at the top of the ledge and in the top 10! Slowly as recruits better players the team will improve.
But at least he is doing it and IMHO will succeed !
At least he is recruiting Trent Johnson did not recruit highly rated players Obryant being his highest

True, and I think Magnum was a 5-star and JOB3 a four star though a high four star as he played in some of the more prestigious high school all-star games.
JOB hasn't lived up to his billing but there have been many here over the years who have fullfilled their promise less than him.
Rolle, Koundja, Harold Boudreaux, Lester Earl just to name 4 off the top of my head.
Rolle at least did become a decent player on an average mid-level La. Tech team by the time he was a senior and there was talk he'd be drafted in the NBA. I don't think he was.

JJ will recruit better than Trent, but that's not the benchmark to strive for.
But as stated earlier, the circumstances are lining up well for him in the near future and there is some tantalizing low-lying fruit out there.

He was 4* in Rivals, but 5* in ESPN and Scout iirc.
He hasn't been an All-SEC caliber of player, but you can tell how talented he is. He has been hurt both seasons and is still developing.
For all the criticism, I thought he played pretty well today. You never want to see the high number of turnovers, but I thought he made up for it with his shooting and rebounding.

Best game in awhile tonight. But still making alot of the same fundamental mistakes. Two traveling calls, still bringing the ball too low too often in the post, forcing shots in high traffic.
But at least he rebounded and didn't get in foul trouble tonight and he cut down on the bad shot selection i.e. the fall-aways and 3's. Unfortunately, his teammates took up his slack in the bad shot selection department.

quote:BS! A college basketball team can be turned around in a year with just one great recruiting class. One class of athletes that can play, combined with competent coaching will be enough to turn a program around over night. Let's see what Jones can do with all these great recruits he's suppposed to have coming in. No excuses. We'll know what we got in JJ next season if all the recruits make it to campus and are eligible.

I know one thing, Johnny will not get five years to turn it around. LSU fans/alums will not wait that long to see results.

I don't know, it seems to me that the apathy is deafening for hoops. And the guys that were making the most noise finally got there guy after the 3rd try.
I think he'll get 5 and I hope he makes it. I think he will make it past that because of his recruiting and the serindipitous circumstances in the near future that will make that recruiting much easier.
That doesn't excuse the underperformance of late, but I guess I'll forget all about that if we can make some tournaments and make some noise in a few of them.
