I don't think elite and season should even be used together. I think the word "elite" can only be used to described programs, and it has to trend over the course of 10 or so seasons.
To answer your question though, I think there is only one team a year that can have a truly "elite" season- the team that wins the NC. The bowl system is so fubar, it is difficult to make other generalizations.
