ETA:
I have been stuck trying to trouble shoot my own PC without a tester years ago. Learned a lot about not being cheap on PSUs and having a rail go out.

i had a computer come in one day that would shut itself off if you put a cd in the cd player.
after hours of pulling my hair out i discovered the PSU was too weak to run the fricking laser!
