Every memorable character is typically a protagonist or antagonist anyway or are we talking a separate heroes list and a separate villains list?

I'd beg to differ. The most memorable characters are the ones that sway between good and evil and make it difficult to say if they're the hero or the villain.

False. There's a reason classic stories (and even mythology) are remembered to this day. It has nothing to do with cannon and everything to do with the motivation and passion to have a stance and stick to it. There is a little interesting or memorable about someone who can't make up their mind.
