I know what you mean and I do agree to an extent. If that scenario played out, I'd expect Smith or Lopez to be traded. Lopez just doesn't rebound well enough for a starting C and gets lost at times. Also, this money might not be spent this year but for arguments sake, let's say it is. For this team to go deep, it will need another impact player. If a star SF were available, I think that's where our cap room would go but there's just not one.

If Davis rebounds the way he is expected to, he'll take a significant amount of that burden. Frankly, I'm not sold on Davis as a center. He just looks like the prototype of a new breed of PF to me.

Look at it like the Vasquez/Gordon pairing, they seem to be greater than the sum of the parts. Lopez' developing offensive game (inside-out) could pair well with Davis' game (more outside-in). If they could provide inside offense with Gordon/Vasquez giving outside scoring punch, a guy like Aminu can wreak havoc on the glass.

I think you may see an upgrade to Lopez at some point down the line, but then he could be a damn good scoring post player off the bench.

i agree...what if we stay where we are, add a combo guard like Douglas, draft a SF to play with Aminu (or get Miller ready), and go after someone next year...who will be available then?

Two years is probably the earliest we would be ready to go really deep anyway with the development of the young guys.
