DiCaprio in Django > Waltz in Basterds

It's not his fault the character's one dimensional, Goeth just is. When you look at it from strictly a character point of view, it's just playing a terrifying psycho. He's basically playing a less sympathetic version of Francis Dolarhyde. Because Goeth was real, that doesn't impact his role in any way. As a viewer it sure does.
The topic is not who had the better character, the topic is who gave the better performance. Fiennes was far and away the better of the two.

I wasn't talking about who was the better character, I was talking about how the role is limiting in what it allows the actor to be able to show in a performance.
Other than he was really scary, what makes Fiennes far and away better?

What Fiennes was able to do with his eyes. You look into those eyes and you see no emotion, no remorse, no pity. You see pure unadulterated evil. That's what elevates his performance in my opinion. The scene between him and Helen Hirsch in the basement of his villa is really tense because you know this guy is a complete and total psychopath but you don't know what he's going to do. He seems calm, cool, very loving toward her. And then, all of a sudden, he turns on a dime and begins to kick her arse.

I don't disagree with any of that, I just don't think it makes his performance obviously better than Waltz.

Really?
Fiennes. I never realized anyone thought anything differently.
No one with any sense would.

Why is Fiennes' performance so much better than Waltz's?

Waltz played the Nazi douchebag frickhead better, so in the scope of the question I guess he wins.
