LSU (9-3) 63, Auburn (7-7) 68 Recap

The Auburn Tigers (7-7) defeated the LSU Tigers (9-3) on Wednesday night by a final score of 68-63 before a rowdy Auburn crowd. After falling behind early, LSU went into halftime with a 1 point lead. LSU came out in the second half looking to extend the lead until Johnny O'Bryant picked up his 3rd foul. With Johnny O'Bryant out, Auburn capitalized and went on a run to go ahead. LSU was never able to shoot themselves back into the game. They ended up shooting 13 more shots from the floor, but 12 less free throws.
LSU was 9 of 27 from three point land for 33% and a meager 4 of 10 from the free throw line. LSU outrebounded Auburn 40 to 38 and both teams had 15 assists and 12 turnovers. LSU scored 32 to Auburn's 26 in the paint, 13 to Auburn's 8 off turnovers, and 15 2nd chance points to Auburn's 6. None of it was enough.
Auburn won the SoS by 10.9 on a night where LSU struggled from the field. Andrew Del Piero had 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 13 minutes. He also had his first career assist. Charles Carmouche continued a great run of highly efficient games with his 15 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists in 32 minutes of action. Coleman had a disappointing SEC opener scoring only 4 points with 3 assists and 3 turnovers. His 9 rebounds did lead the team.
LSU continued a pattern of taking more three pointers on the road. In LSU's four road games they have shot 29, 28, 27, and 26 three pointers. In home games the Tigers are averaging just under 20 three point shots per game. They haven't shot more than 25 at home. In those road games LSU is shooting just 33.6% while they are shooting 37.7% at home.
While LSU was able to outscore Auburn in the paint, it was done inefficiently. LSU was held to 40% shooting from 2 point range, their lowest average of the season. Johnny O'Bryant was successful a few times with post moves, but LSU was never able to get continued success down low. A major concern is the lack of fouls LSU is forcing. LSU was only able to get to the line for 10 shots (made 4). The 40% from the free throw line was the teams lowest average since opening night where they hit 7 of 20 for 35%.
With all the shooting woes, LSU was still able to keep it close. LSU got plenty of shots and just didn't hit enough. Without a major scoring threat down low, LSU will need to hit shots and free throws. The Tigers weren't able to on this night, but they showed the ability to take care of the ball (2nd lowest turnovers this season), and were able to record 15 assists on only 25 baskets.
Season Prediction:
17-12, NIT

definitely earned the 4 wins. I had them finishing around 13 wins, but they are progressing alot quicker under Johnny Jones.

Man the shooting was bad last night. Having said that, I didn't think that they looked THAT bad in the first half. Good quick ball movement. The second half was a different story. It was basically just throwing up 3's.

Oh no, we suck again!
Very nice write up SOS.

Agree. The first half I was very impressed with the ball movement. I think the crowd really messed with LSU in the second half. Auburn looked so pumped and when they took the lead, it looked like LSU deflated.
It Carmouche could have made a shot before the last minute, it could have been a different story. He missed so many easy, wide open looks.
And with the free throw shooting, or lack thereof, its pretty impressive that we only lost by 6. With just mediocre shooting last night, we win the game. Sometimes you are just gonna be off, and last night was one of those nights.

The Auburn 2-3 zone was the killer. If you don't hit your outside shots against that defense, you get what happened last night. With all due respect to the kid because I know he tries hard, but how JOB III was a McDonald's Parade All American baffles me. I just don't see it.

quote:I think this is misleading. Anyone that watched that game saw that Carmouche struggled last night. 11 of his 15 points came in the last 1:05 after the game had already been decided.

Anyway, two mediocre teams who are fairly evenly matched played and, as usual, the home team came out on top.

I agree that his scoring was late, but I was impressed with other parts of his game. He was disruptive on defense, dished out 7 assists, and had 6 rebounds.
If he was able to shoot before the last minute LSU has a great shot of winning this game.

BUT like you said, most of his points came after the game was really over. He missed 2 layups, 1 literally wide open. He missed a ton of wide open three pointers, and struggled shooting until 60 seconds left.

I'm guessing he was shaving points, but I don't have any proof other than the missed lay ups.

Did you notice the score with 38 seconds left? Lucky games are 40 minutes and not 39:20 haha.

Florida will be rough on most teams in the SEC. See Georgia for details. BUT will probably hold their own. It should be a fun one to watch.

Are we the only team in the nation that has a harder time finishing at the rim than from 3? Outside of Hickey and Stringer to an extent, we are awful finishers.

It's shocking how poor we have been this year at finishing... It's why I dont have a problem shooting threes early in the shot clock. I honestly think we have a better chance with a wide open three than a partially contested shot near the rim. That is sad.

What was up with Mouche getting all the time last night. Hardly any Morgan. No Collins

Im over this one.. AU is def playing better just gotta make free throws.. My score prediction was nearly spot on with 1 min left in the game... Yall laughed at that prediction...Too bad we dont get to come to BR for the win there... Looks like AU could be 3-0 in conferenc play when we host UK..

With just mediocre play from Carmouche and Coleman, we win last night.
And I don't want to be that guy, but I'm gonna say it anyway...O'Bryant never ever should have been in foul trouble last night. some of those calls were absolutely ridiculous.
That said, props to Auburn for those 2nd half runs. It's hard to get back in it when your opponent is not missing a single shot.
