I'm not a huge fan of them. They will only cool your whiskey a bit and not really make it cold or even really cool. Also, for me personally, a couple cubes of ice serve at least a dual purpose in that they cool the whiskey, but also end up watering it down a bit which will often open up the whiskey a bit more. If it's so good of a whiskey that I don't want it watered at all, I'll just drink it neat.

What the good Dr. said. When I am drinking something special, like PVW, I have it neat with a glass of icewater on the side. I'll often put a straw full or two of icewater in after I've tried it straight up to see if a little water helps open it up.

They are a cool gift as they offer something for the whiskey enthusiast to play with. I usually add one ice cube as it affords the propper amount of H2O and cooling for me in a dram of scotch. Whiskey's that do not benefit from H2O may benefit fromt he stones.
