Most certainly not...rankings are extremely important late in the year and constitute "contending".

Well, MSU was 7-0 at one point this year and they weren't contenders.
LSU is basically a contender by default on talent alone every year to start. I think Miles certainly deserves a lot of credit for maintaining that kind of program.
