I know you can use the D pad to put on top spin and backspin, but I'm still trying to figure out how to draw/fade too

While a course is loading, I was reading the tips and it mentioned something about flicking the Vita forward or towards you right before, or on contact with the ball for an added power boost. The screen supposedly goes dark and a blue spark is visible when making contact.. can anyone back this claim up?
