Looking to get a small/compact pistol for range shooting and self protection for around 400. What do all recommend or say stay away from.

Ruger SR9/SR9c and Kahr CM9 are two of my carry guns around $400. I trust both with my life. Any other Kahr is also really good and reasonably priced.

I also really like the Stoeger Cougar. It is still made on Beretta machines. The only difference between the Stoeger Cougar and the Beretta Cougar is the finish.

You won't know which one is best for you until you hold them. The right gun will choose you.

It's true though. When you hold the right one, it just feels SO right. Having that much comfort makes shooting the gun that much more fun and leads to better comfort, trust, and accuracy.

I agree the feel of the gun is important. I have a S&M M&P 9mm I love the feel of it is just a little heavy.

I have two Taurus pistols and both have been very good firearms with hundreds-1000 rounds down each. I'm not saying their on par with a knight custom 1911 or a Sig anything. But they go bang everytime with good accuracy.

You won't find much lighter in terms of a full sized handgun. Maybe a few ounces, but not enough to tell. When you start getting smaller, the magazine capacity decreases. Weight isn't a bad thing for home defense and people have a tough time accepting that. For concealed carry, yea it's a bit of a nuisance.

The M&P Shield is awesome but it's also hard as shite to find.
