The stock length and the weight are a problem with the full size gun. I had actually wanted to get him a henry golden boy chambered in 30 30 but he struggles shooting mine cause its so heavy.

a youth model stock is 1" shorter than a regular model.

1" does make a big difference on a kid but if he's 11 and a bit tall for his age, you should be able to go with a full size rifle in 7mm-08 and the extra weight will help with the recoil.

I have an 8 yr old that started hunting this year. I had a model 700 in 270 already that was my dads.I got a youth stock for it on eBay and got some managed recoil ammo.he is a crackshot and recoil is minimal.I will put. the full size stock on when he gets bigger.
