FWIW the media is running with this story as if it proved causality when in fact all the study did was link association. Further they are trying to imply that since 40% with the disease were lineman, that linemen are at higher risk but since all of the players they studied (preselected as having symptoms of the disease) had findings the 40% is more reflecitve of the sample make up than the disease prevalance. then they include a 17 yr old HS student who had a subdural hematoma and resulting death as having had Chronic traumatic encephalopathy which is just laughable.
A more telling study would be to study 1000 or more brains where there is no selection bias to those with patholiogy. Then the prevalance of CTE in football players may be better established.
Better yet simply doing EEG and Functinal Brain Scans correlating with IMPACT testing pre, during and post football careers would be most telling.
Let me reitterate:
This study meerly shows an association but not causality to trauma including but not limited to football. Further the study is not designed in a way to indicate which positions or types of hits if any are more dangerous.

Dont think getting rid of facemasks would fix anything. Sure, there would be fewer guys head hunting...but collisions would still occur, and the damage would be much worse. Lots of knocked out teeth. Has anybody done any studies on the long term effects of rugby.
never seen a study, but you can get plenty of anecdotes from current or former rugby players on this board. Worst injury to head or face I ever saw while playing was a bloodied nose, and that was because the poor little back ran into the arm of a teammate.
There are plenty of fun collisions, but you play differently when you don't have a hard helmet and face mask to use as a weapon.

Every generation dating back to the beginning of the game could have said the same thing.
Every game changes over time.

You say this as if it was simple to arrange this situation and they choose not to.
