i used to bring mine in when it got below 25 at night. When cold, he would just get on the mulch pile and enjoy the warmth produced by the decaying leaves. During the day, he would get in a spot that was sunny and out of the wind.
Had a golden once that had icicles on his fur while duck hunting. Never even shivered.
