That's true, but I think the Logo, colors, team history, and players have more of an effect on people's buying decisions in pro sports. There are so many teams with "dumb" mascots in pro sports but people support them.
Look at the Lakers. People outside of LA don't buy Laker gear because they think the name is cool. They buy it because they either:
A. Like a player, coach, or combination of players and coaches.
B. Liked the way the shirt or hat looked (colors and Logo)
C. Jumped on the bandwagon of a winning team and pretend to be a fan cause they don't have anything else to cheer for in Wyoming.
I guess my point is that the actual logo design/color combo is more important the the team branding than the actual mascot name itself.
