I agree that Warner is in over his head when he tries to write a piece in this style. However, what I don't agree with is that there is no value to sports writing as good literature in the right context. Not all sports writing must be done in accordance with the basic rules of structure taught in fundamental English composition classes, the purpose of which is to drag people from illiteracy into basic writing competence. If you can find them, go read some of Herbert Warren Wind's writing in "The New Yorker" on various major golf tournaments, the Masters in particular. It's priceless.

The problem is the piece is riddled with errors that a HS student would be able to catch.
THAT is the problem.
