I bet that's real fun; clearing rooms on a ship with metal walls with a fully auto shotgun.
I would shite my pants

I never saw a semi auto or auto shotgun even so much as in the armory, when I was in navy....except for personally owned semi autos that were stored in armory.
I did see a couple of short barrel winchester pumps-they belonged to a very special group....
Never saw them outside of armory........
Pump shotguns were definitely wielded I. Late summer early fall of 87...

There have been a few units that have requested the AA12 for different uses, but they have all been denied due to budgetary restraints. I have heard it was tested in Iraq with some great reviews in the cities, but most of the ops in Afghanistan happen in smaller villages where the bad guys are well out of shotgun range, even the cool WP and shrapnel rounds for the AA12.

The two main reasons that you won't ever see a shotgun replace a rifle is weight and bulk.
Shotgun shells are way too bulky and the gun would be too heavy

if you are boarding a small vessel - 65 ft yacht.. with the intentions of removing a person from the yacht.... 2 fellas armed with a shot gun is a plus... of course.... the usual complement on weapons would also be present throughout the platoon. especially in a special operations scenario... variety of weapons is a plus...
and before any of you say your a-5 or sbe could be used in place of a pump....
1. drop your shotgun from the top of a two story building.
2. leave in saltwater for 12-18 hours..or better yet - dunk it in and out of salt water for 10-12 hours..
3. get it nice and sandy....
4. worse yet - be in the north sea.... where salt spray freezes... quickly...
you may get that first shot off.. but... in those conditions. if i need a shot gun - it's going to be a pump...
look at what happens to fishing reels in the surf zone....

Yeah we've for cut down 870's as well but it's strictly a breaching tool.
