Exactly. You shouldn't be at a clear competitive disadvantage when the season starts because of your schedule.

Let's take this point one step further. How often do we hear talking heads explain their pre-season rankings of teams based on the perceived toughness of the upcoming schedule? You hear it every year...so-and-so is a great team, but road trips to x and y and a visit from z pose too great a threat.

Of course the schedule matters...it's one thing to say we're powerless to change our current state, why should we be so eager to roll over and be ok with it?

That is exactly the wrong argument. You can beat Bama and lose to Ga and Fla and still Bama will be in the title game. More importantly, when you play 2 more tough games it makes it more difficult to beat Bama, it takes a lot out of the team, not to mention injuries.
