I think so too, but if two players have equal playing time and one has a fg and a 3pt and the other has two assists, i think the former had a bigger impact.
Eta: especially if he has a high fg %. Its a much more valuable statistic for him.

Many times I think the pass is more important than the shot. What if his field goal was a wide open layup and the pass was while he was double teamed.
What if the three pointer was wide open in a spot that the assister knew he loved to shoot from? I think the assist is as important as the shot, or more.
Plenty of people have 15 point games, but we have yet to have a single player get even 7 assists in a game.
