Without trying to spoil anything, if you are still playing as Hatham than you are still playing basically the "prologue", that I was referring to.
I can't remember exactly how long you have to go, but it shouldn't be a ridiculously long time until you get to the main story line.
Stick with it, it does open up.

What I tried to do after every mission is take time to collect trinkets, do hunting quests, stuff like that. The trinkets give you more naval missions to go on....
