None of the "teams figured it out" or "recruited for it" BS is true. Offense go out of style because the coaches who run those offenses go out of style.
There's always a lot of back and worth and as others have mentioned, some of the basic principles remain. Just like the run and shoot. It did not go away. The Giants and even NE run variations of the RNS, they just use TE's and some different formations.
Lining up in the traditional bone would be easier to stop, teams would stack 11 in the box. Hell A&M was stacking 10 in the box against LSU. When LSU had a month to prepare for GT in the Peach Bowl a couple of years ago, we shut it down. You have to disguise things a little better.

And whatever happened to the Veer?
I think Acadiana High School runs it, and it has won them a state championship again a powerhouse.

Teams run out of the spread now because spreading the field makes the defense declare their formation and scheme earlier. When you have a tight offensive formation the defense can keep all of their personnel jumbled in the middle of the field and the offense has a hard time figuring out what they are going to do.
That is why you see the QB point across the LOS and identify the MLB. they can call out their blocking scheme or protection scheme once the MLB and any potential blitzers are identified.
