DL recruiting question

Downs is gone & it's prob 50/50 if Logan stays or goes. If he leaves, we've got Freak & Ego starting, w/ Mickey J. & Quentin T. rotating in. Seems a little weak & one injury to Freak/Ego away from being the weakest position group on the team. (plus I wouldn't be shocked if Freak was gone after '13 & there's chatter about Tevin Lawson not qualifying.)
Any gurus/insiders a little curious as to why we're not going balls out for a stud juco DT? I like that we saw the need & went & got Q. Leslie @ WR. Any Claude Wroten/Akeem Hicks out there we should've pressed hard for a signature?

Because JC Dt's are first off hard to evaluate. Chances are for every Wroten you get there will be three Toran Williams. Toran Williams was suppose to be the stud JC DT in the 01 class that we fought UF for in a heated battle. He never made the three deep even after red-shirting his first year. I can promise you if Mickey Johnson and Quentin Thomas were playing in JC the past two years they would be ranked in the top 15-25 players at worst. Toby Johnson is the only DT that has a chance to be LSU material next year, and I doubt he is better than Ego. Try selling a battle for second string to a JUCO player. Its more risk than reward unless you see somebody you really really like.

I don't care if they're JUCO or true FR, we desperately need DTs who.are ready to play next year and play well. If Logan leaves, we are extremely thin there. At a position that used to be the strength of the team. let's face it, Freak has not been the stud we expected yet, and Ego has been underwhelming. And we're counting on QT and Mickey to provide quality 2nd string reps after having never sniffed the field? DT--hell, the entire DL has questions not only at starters, but also depth. We need to hit on those rare FR that can contribute immediately and Moffittneeds to light a fire under some assed already here.

Our success may rely on how much of a jump Rasco and Freak make. Seems most of our All-American types have made more noise in their first 2 years. Color me skeptical.

Depth is a pretty serious concern. But, I wouldn't be surprised to see Danielle Hunter get Mingo/Montgomery hype in the future. Kid is going to be good.

Downs has given valiant effort, but no of SEC calibur. The thing that disturbs me about him seeing so much pt is; what does that say about Freak?

JOhnson is not the player he was hyped to be;he isn't bad, but he is not a dominant player at this point.

it takes time for guys to develop. this is the sec. look at brockers, he didn't develop until his jr. year along with logan. minter is in his 4th year and is having his best year. obj, landry, collins were all 5* players and none of them is dominating. you are asking too much for a soph. to dominate the sec.

Who are you talking about lights it up in their first two years more than Johnson? It's Mingo's 4th year and he has the same amount of tackles, HALF the amount of tfl, and one more sack than Johnson. Mingo and Montgomery did not set the world on fire until their 3rd year. Same with Logan and Brockers. Nevis and even Dorsey were not great until they were seniors. Even going back to Spears and Hill the 3rd year is when they put it together. Here is a 2nd year Dorsey and Johnson stats and remember Johnson has 4 games left.
GP-GS Solo Ast Total TFL-Yds Sack-Yds
Glenn Dorsey 13-1 16 12 28 4.0 - 24 3.0-23
A. Johnson 9-3 10 15 25 8.0- 24 2.0 -13

The reasons for lack of depth in the middle next season are circumstances involving the 2009 and 2010 classes:
2009:
Brockers - great player, but declared for NFL as a RS soph
Downs - graduating; arguably should have redshirted as a true freshman
Davenport - moved to OL
Logan - great player, but could declare for NFL after this season
Also note that although his eligibility would have expired last season, 2009 recruit Hicks was dismissed from the team before ever playing a down.
2010:
Copeland - recruited for DL but moved to FB.
Ego - only DT from 2010 class
If Logan leaves early, Ego would be the only DT on the team next season from those two classes.

I'm not sure there arent a few juco DT's out there that wouldn't come in next year & push Ego as the 2nd best DT from day 1 (assuming Logan leaves, of course).
Plus, the way we rotate DT's, you could argue of you are in the top 4, you're practically a starter.

I'm willing to bet LSU is comfortable with Mickey and Thomas at DT because it doesn't seem like they've had much urgency at that position recruiting. They know they can get who they want at the position too...
They must be comfortable with Ego, Johnson, Freak, and Thomas.

Yes there is one that has a small chance of doing that this year in Toby Johnson. We are not on his radar. There is still a better chance of even him not making the two deep than beating out Ego. Look at the top 4 d-lineman last year in Autry, McCullers, Sentimore, and Damien Jacobs. All are very bad or below average SEC players. If this was a year like 2011 with three sure thing players we would be after one, but this year is like last year.

he was the best DL on the team the first few weeks until les benched him in favor of his pet downs.
not sure what games you were watching

I just don't get this at all. He is in 2nd year out of high school. There has not been a more dominant D lineman at LSU that was just in his 2nd year at LSU. He has 8 tfl already and is on pace for 11-12 tfl for the year. Spears and Hill 2nd year 8tfl combined when they were on the field 90% of the time. Glen Dorsey and Tyson Jackson in their second year removed from high-school had just 5 tfl combined ...They were the two highest DL taken in the nfl draft in our history, both top five picks. Where do you people get this stuff from? Please find any DL in Saban/Miles era that is putting up the numbers Freak is in his second year removed from high school? The only one that comes even close is Kyle Williams in 03, and he had a lot more snaps that year.
