More than likely too many walkers to kill based on size of their group and amount of ammo they had.
They only needed the one cell block and access to a few other places ( kitchen, armory) so why risk it

I imagine systematically sweeping the prison for walkers was part of the long term strategy. It had only been 5 days since they put the two prisoners in their own block.
They were still clearing bodies and trying to burn them at that point. Progress is slow with that few able bodies, limited daylight, and limited supplies.
