Different folks have different policies. Some offer to pay for the surgery while others will refund money plus give you a new pup. The biggest thing is you improve your odds of not having to go through that ordeal by having the parents certified. This is not an absolute that your pup will not develop hyp problems but your odds are way better than with a pup that you know nothing about the sire or dame.

so having both parents certified too would push the price up to about a grand?

I have yet to have a dog with hyp problems that came from certified parents. None that I have owned or trained that is.
