According to published stats, the .35 Whelen has considerably more kick in ft-lbs. than the .444 Marlin. The Whelen is more powerful and more flat shooting.
I have a .444 and use the Hornady Leverevolution ammo, which works great. It groups well and has good terminal ballistics.
To reduce recoil, I use a Limbsave recoil pad and also added a 1 lb mercury recoil supressor in the stock to add weight.
