Aside from very cold conditions and snowy conditions, I wouldn't buy Goretex. It takes forever to dry and is far too hot. Mesh is breathable and dries quickly. When I had to wade through streams and hike in the rain I was glad to have something that let my feet breathe and could dry overnight.
