#9. New Orleans Saints - Sam Montgomery - LSU
New Orleans could use a pass-rusher. Will Smith is getting older, and a lack of pass rush has hurt the Saints.
Montgomery has been a leader of the Tigers' fierce defensive line. He totaled 49 tackles with 13.5 tackles for a loss, nine sacks and one forced fumble in 2011. Montgomery had 18 tackles with six tackles for a loss and two sacks as a freshman.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder added weight this offseason and that should help him to remain a 4-3 end prospect. He has the frame to continue to get bigger and will add weight as he ages.
The added bulk that Montgomery packed on over the offseason looks like it is helping with shedding blocks. He also looks more explosive as he is another year removed from his knee injury. Montgomery has 15 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks this year.

The Saints are getting zero pressure on the quarterback. Cameron Jordan is good against the run, but he's been a bust as a pass-rusher thus far. Will Smith, meanwhile, looks like a shell of his former self. He's due $10 million in 2013, so he obviously won't be back.

I would take him back at a much lower restructured deal

round 3:
quote:
New Orleans Saints: Akeem Spence, DT, Illinois - Spence is a quick gap-shooting defensive tackle who can cause disruption at the point of attack. The junior has 22 tackles, two tackles for a loss, .5 sacks and a forced fumble so far this year. He had a decent 2011 season with 69 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

The common theme for this years draft should be Defense Defense Defense.

Major decisions at OT too could play into the 1st Rd pick.
Bushrod UFA: big bucks? keep for another moderate deal?
Strief: up to snuff as a starter?
Charles Brown: he looked much improved in preseason but we still do not really know the team's outlook for him. He might be ready to step up to starter or maybe not.
If not Bushrod or Brown at LT then that becomes a huge priority whether by FA signing or draft.
I'm draftaholic but we still don't have a read to even the vicinity of where picking. There's a giant chasm in talent from a top 10 pick to a #20 range.

While I agree, if Bushrod tries to get a big deal that needs to be a priority, but I don't see how he would command that. He's been serviceable and pretty good at times. But if he starts spouting off wanting premier LT money, he can test the market

I don't want Sam. Sorry. I think he's overrated

I agree we have needs on the O-Line. I just don't see the front office pulling the trigger in the first round on O-Line. They like to get those later round gems.

don't think he goes way bigger either. Still, he's at a $3.25mil base and over $4mil per year avg cap hit. That will only go up if anything. After being voted the best OLine a couple of times my inclination is to think some other team will value him higher than the Saints. Similar to Goodwin but more based on performance than age. Brown ready to roll in would be a great gain for the team in cap issues.

This. Although he plays very hard. I just see him being another bigger, slower DE whose ceiling is will smiths career. That's fine for later but not worth a really high pick if that's where we go.

Completley disagree. In football you can find talent anywhere with good scouts

That sounds like the whole process of scouting, ranking, and drafting is meaningless. I agree that you can find players anywhere but the probability of success is what is tied to the draft position. Even a serviceable LT like Bushrod taken in the 4th Rd is not common. Most top notch pass rushing DEs or LTs either are higher end picks or never hit the free agent market. I rate the Saints scouting as elite with the number of gems they have mined.

Just as an example, players selected 1-10 in 2007 nfl draft...Jamarcus Russell, Joe Thomas, Gaines Adams, Levi Brown, LaRon Landry, Jamaal Anderson, Ted Ginn Jr, and Amobi Okoye (I'm leaving out AP and Calvin cause they proved to be top talent)
After the 10th pick there was Patrick Willis, Marshawn Lynch, Adam Carriker, Darrelle Revis, Lawerence Timmons, Leon Hall, Dwayne Bowe, Jonathon Beason, Joe Staley, Ben Grubbs

If we had the # 9 overall pick I'd hope we are able to trade down for more picks. It's not as tho our first rounders have exactly been pro bowlers anyhow
