Well he didn't exactly get the jump on her. Guess he was surprised, she was coming at him, BLAM
And I agree with the others. It was too set the tone of the show, to let people know we are messing around with this series.

Wasn't that his first day after waking up? At that time, maybe he didn't realize the extent of the zombies or that loud noises can attract them.
And if he did realize all that, then he was feeling sorry for the girl and did what he had to do when she ran at him. As for the noise, he was about to leave anyway so it didn't matter.
