New Music Trend - "Incomplete" Bands...

Just returned to NOLA from a long weekend in NYC catching the ATP festival (longtime bucket list trip to catch the Afghan Whigs reunion.) The fest was great and got to see a lot of good music with friends.
Anyway, to the point of the thread. What's up with all the incomplete bands? Incomplete meaning missing a traditional cog in the band make-up. Most typically a bass player but not limited to any certain instrument. Literally half of the bands I saw over the weekend had this issue.
Is it a new trend I'm not hip to or is it the recession?
Anyway, the Whigs (complete) were incredible and I was really blown away by The Dirtbombs set as well. Mark Lanegan had the best backing band i have ever seen him with. Anyone going to Tips next month to see the Whigs will be in for a treat.

Everyone can be programmed.
If your bassist is a dick, drop him. Sync with Ableton. Profit$$$$

My friends just went to that festival... little disappointed it was moved from Jersey...
I dunno, the guitar/drum combo seems to be popular with the bluesier bands...

Worked out well for us cause we had friends who lived in the city. If not, we would of had to rent a car. Venue was a little weird. Two stages - one in a converted pier warehouse and one under the FDR freeway.

She is a beaut
I fixed the pickups to make them all even
The neck pickup was much louder than the bridge
