basically it reads like williams is trying to do what he thinks (or knows) he must to get an eventual reinstatement to the league without throwing vilma or anyone else completely under the bus
That's what I was thinking as well, although he's thrown Vilma under the bus plenty.

giving williams the benefit of the doubt, he's pushed vilma back into the path of the bus thinking he has a good chance to get out of the way
