I think the problem is over-saturation. Back in the day of storylines like Days of Future Past (see above post), Phoenix Saga, Morlocks, etc you only had one XMen book. Eventually you had New Mutants, but that really could stand on its own (and usually did). Same with X-Factor and then Excalibur.
Once you got into multiple XMen books as well as many characters getting their own personal books, it just got to be too much. You can either do quantity or quality, Marvel has been doing quantity with the X books for quite a while.
