It only lasts a couple of days, and is downtown. Sheltered areas (like my house) get no Taku Winds. You may get 2-3 episodes of this rare phenomenon a winter.

My office used to be downtown though and you would get those damn winds funneled between buildings at a steady 80-100 mph, and temps around 5 degrees or so. You just stay inside and avoid downtown if possible.

Area between the bridge downtown Juneau and the mouth of the Taku River about 8 miles away are the only places that get this rare affect. They have been known for centuries to the natives as the Devil Wind.

It;s basically sustained tropical storm/hurricane force winds in cold, clear weather.
