They should have. But from the age differential they probably never heard of Johnny Pesky until they entered the Red Sox clubhouse. And for some of them that was when Johnny less than 5 years ago and Johnny probably just seemed like a random old guy to them.
Not excusing the behavior. Just trying to add some perspective.
