Rereading the first book. In a Jon POV, Jon is talking to Benjen about the wall. He mentions that Daeran Targaryen took Dorne at 15 and was a hero of his. Benjens retorts that Daeran also died at 18.
What age is Jon when the Watch stabs him? Just thought this was an interesting parallel.
ETA: Just got the symbolism of the dire wolf dead with the stag's antler in its throat. Catelyn is a dumbass.
ETAA: Why is Benjen at the wall? Any good crackpot theories about that?

Benjen is probably at the Wall because he learned of Jon's parentage and felt guilty about knowing where Lyanna was with Rhaegar. Or he just didn't want to play second fiddle to Ned.

As ladytiger said, some think it has to do with knowledge of Jon's lineage.
FWIW, Starks have historically served on the Night's Watch. So it could just be that.
