Here's a question: what would have been an appropriate response by Jon to Ramsay's letter in the eyes of Bowen Marsh and company? (putting aside the question of whether the letter was true).
Just stay there and wait for Bolton to come get him like he threatened?
Put up a fight at the wall when Ramsay showed up?
Give himself up to Ramsay?
Give up Sylese and Melissandre?

I tend to believe that Marsh and Co stabbed Jon more because he let the wildlings through the Wall than the way he reacted to Ramsay's letter. They saw Jon letting them enter the realm as going against everything The Watch stood for, so in their minds they had to do something to preserve the order of things. Also I hate that fat frick Bowen.
