My dime-store scientific opinion

I THINK I read somewhere that Martin said that the reasoning behind the haywire seasons was "magic". I'll see if I can locate where I read that.

Here's one quote I found from him on the subject..
quote:

I have gotten a number of fan letters over the years from readers who are trying to figure out the reason for why the seasons are the way they are. They develop lengthy theories: perhaps it’s a multiple-star system, and what the axial tilt is, but I have to say, “Nice try, guys, but you’re thinking in the wrong direction.” This is a fantasy series. I am going to explain it all eventually, but it’s going to be a fantasy explanation. It’s not going to be a science-fiction explanation.

another very telling quote from Martin:

quote:

the power of my fiction comes from the emotional side of things and not the rationalist side of things. I prefer, for example, not to outline. I did outline during my Hollywood decade, because it’s required of you there, but on my own stories I have usually a general idea of where the story is going, but I do not break it all down and design it ahead of time. I just sort of fill in the blanks during the writing. The characters come alive and they take me to that destination, if the story is working.

From the same link you provided

I suspected this all along, in that the story tells itself...there is no concrete framework from beginning to end, other than a very vague idea...King always gave this "I'm just reporting it as it happens" idea of writing...like being along for the ride.
The biggest problem with epics written in this way, the author needs one hell of an editor, as well as a Robin Furth to study character/ plot history, to catalog cultural histories and traditions, languages, vocabulary, geography, etc to avoid accidental contradictions...without someone to serve in this capacity the writing/ editing process would be....lengthy.
