I have always wondered about the whole Stark in Winterfell saying. At first I thought it was just a cliche saying but then realized reading through the histories they make it a point. When Eddard went avenge his father and brother Benjen specifically stayed in Winterfell instead of also riding to war.
I find it strange he wouldn't go knowing that from his time in the NW he has been a good warrior. I'm wondering if Martin will touch on it or will it simply endure as theory. And I mean the specific reason.

Does anyone think that Mormont's Raven doesn't work for the Three Eyed Crow? He has supernatural aspects about him and just seems to be far to prominent in the events of the Night's Watch to not be. He's the perfect little lovable spy for the Three Eyed Crow and can subtly manipulate the Night's Watch through its Lord Commander by repeating or saying words of interest to him. All the Raven is doing is spying and planting little ideas in their head that will hopefully lead to their doom.
It is a little questionable though on why he would get Jon to lead the Watch over Slynt, since Slynt would have been completely incompetent and have killed Jon Snow. All Jon Snow can serve as is keeping the raven by his side (which Slynt wouldn't have), but also result in likely thousands of less Wildings as fodder for the Others' army. The 3EC needs Jon dead, so I'm not sure why he would have passed on a guarantee by basically manipulating the watch in choosing Jon.
