This offseason was about as bad as it could get for the Mavs until about last week. All of a sudden Cuban inks OJ Mayo, Chris Kaman, Elton Brand, Darren Collison, and resign Delonte West. What makes me applaud Cuban for it is other than Mayo, he limited nearly every contract to 1 year. So the Mavericks will still be a major player in the offseason next year while still maintaining playoff talent...supposedly. That brings me to the original question. Is this lineup good enough to make the playoffs in the west?

Predicted starting lineup:

PG- Darren Collison/Roddy Buckets
SG- O.J. Mayo/Delonte West
SF- Shawn Marion/Vince Carter
PF- Dirk Nowitzki/Elton Brand
C- Chris Kaman

It's a stretch, but if everyone can find a role, this team is eerily similar to the 2011 team. The Mavericks have never really won with star power. It's always people doing their roles. With Brand, they can afford to sit Dirk out more. I like the build of the team. Kaman is going to be a huge boost for us. Having a double-double 7 footer not named Dirk will do wonders for our inside game. Mayo brings the speed and youth along with Collison. To me it all hinges on Marion being the defender he's been known to be.

You said they could be a contender. What am i supposed to do but laugh. Research professional basketball teams in oklahoma city and los angeles then reassess your expectations.

You mean the team that had to push 3 games into the final seconds against a Dallas team even worse than the recently signed one?

Maybe. Or one of the last lottery picks.

Either way, permanent mediocrity unless they trade Dirk and rebuild. But Cuban is too arrogant to do that. And won't learn unless he starts seeing a half-empty AAC on a regular basis.

They are a playoff team without a doubt. IF everything falls their way, maybe get to the Western Conference Finals.

The best way to tell if they are a playoff team is to count the teams that are definitely better than them. Right now I can only say LAL, OKC, SA, and maybe LAC. The Mavs are right there with LAC and Memphis.

I can agree with that. However, I'm more confident in our team simply because of who's coaching them. If we had...well...pretty much anyone but Carlisle, I'd be praying for an 8 seed with this lineup. Carlisle is a fricking genius, though. I still say he's the reason for Dallas handling Miami so well.

RC is a defensive guru and with stat lover Cuban, they are pretty much a perfect match. The Mavs laid out a plan to beat them, but so far they have been the only ones to do it.

Cuban would never do that to Dirk. Dirk has been a Maverick since day 1. Absolutely no way Cuban would make him go out any other way after what he's done for this franchise. Dirk still has about 2 years of quality 20+ a game basketball left on those long-arse legs of his. Dallas' name has been floating around Chris Paul when he goes FA. Dirk retiring will be a rebuilding step in itself. The dude is getting paid 20 mil+ a year for 3 more years. Imagine what Cuban could do with that cap space on top of the insane amount of space Dallas already has.

Which blows my mind. All you have to do is force them to play halfcourt offense. I think that's why OKC was such a bad matchup for them. They both like to get out and run. Miami will win that every time. That's why Miami doesn't do well against Boston. Any team that can control tempo and play good halfcourt defense has Miami locked up.

That being said, I don't think anyone is stopping them this year. Signing Ray Allen was just unfair.
