Is there a regulr season each year for golf? How does it work?

This weekend was the "PGA Championship." What does that entail? Is it just another tournament?

I heard one of the announcers saying something about a playoff?

The PGA Championship is a Major tournament and is part of golf's regular season. The playoffs is the Fed Ex Cup. Players build up pts in order to qualify for it.

The Fedex Cup is one weekend tournament, or something that goes on for a while?

It's multiple tournaments that eliminates a portion of the field each time. The winner of the last tournament isn't necessarily the winner of the Fed Ex Cup.

So where do we stand right now? Is the season over?

The "playoff" stuff was created just a couple of years ago to add some excitement to the year after all of the majors have been completed.

The PGA season starts in January and ends somewhere around early November I believe. They have official tournaments every weekend. Of course, no PGA tour pro is going to play in every single tournament all year long, so naturally, the pros skip some of the "minor events" and like to play the more established tournaments with the most tradition and biggest payouts. Golf, for the last 70+ years has labeled 4 of the tournaments as "majors". These 4 tournaments are considered golf's biggest prize, and players gain a special place in golf history when they win one of these four tournaments. The four majors are the Masters, the US Open, the British Open, and the PGA.

As you noticed, the PGA tournament, which is the last of the majors, just ended yesterday. So that means that for the next two months you will have a lull in action (except for Ryder Cup years which is another story). So the PGA decided to spice things up to keep the players and fans interested in the last 2 months of the year. They invented the "Fed Ex Cup", which is basically a playoff. Players earn points throughout the year for good finishes in tournaments, and can qualify for the Fed Ex Cup. I don't know the exact number, but I think that something like 80 golfers qualify for the playoff, and the winner will be crowned over a 3 week or so period. Once the playoff starts, about bottom 25 or so players are cut each week until the last week has about 30 players left. The winner does not necessarily have to win the last tournament, but he is the player that has played the most consistent for the 3 week Fex Cup tournaments.

I'm certain my numbers are not all correct, but I think I'm pretty close on the general idea of the thing.

The top 125 get into the first Fed Ex Cup event, then the field is trimmed to 100, then trimmed to 70, then to 30 for the Tour Championship.

Pretty close, there are 4 events in total. Trimmed the way MedTiger said.

Winner gets a fatass 10 million dollar paycheck.

The points don't matter once you start the Fed Ex tournaments, do they? If you are number 1 getting in, you start at 0 pts just like number 125 does, correct? And I'm pretty sure that you don't have to win the last tournament. For example, Tiger Woods wins the tournament the first two weeks of the playoffs and racks up a ton of playoff points. Then he coasts in the last two weeks to 15th and 12th place finishes but he wins the big prize for the winner of the playoffs. Each Fed Ex Playoff weekend gives the players a chance at a big paycheck. So even though in my example above, Tiger Woods wins the $10 million payday, somebody like Hunter Mahan may pick up a nice paycheck for winning the final 30 man tournament that last weekend.

Does that sound right?

Actually points carry over until the final week of the playoff, before the Tour Championship

Quotes from the PGA tour website..

quote:

The reset prior to THE TOUR Championship will be calibrated so that all 30 seeds will have a mathematical chance to win the FedExCup, with the top half of the field having a good chance. Further, any of the top five seeds would win the FedExCup with a TOUR Championship victory.

quote:

Following the conclusion of the BMW Championship, points will be reset for the top 30 points-earners to that time. The relevant factors regarding the reset are that:
• All 30 players in THE TOUR Championship have a chance to win the FedExCup, possibly depending on how other players finish
• The top 10 seeds have an excellent chance to win the FedExCup if they win THE TOUR Championship
• The top 5 seeds control their own destiny, in the sense that a victory at THE TOUR Championship will guarantee winning the FedExCup.
