But look back at past 5 stars.

I have. A very high percentage panning out would imply that 70%, 80%, or more of all the 5 stars would end up to be more than just solid contributors

2009 Rivals had 33 players ranked as 5 stars. 15 or more of them could be considered wrongfully ranked as 5 star players/recruits. (Dorian Bell, Corey Brown, William Campbell, Davenport, Darius Winston, Patrick Hall, Garrett Gilbert, Jacobbi McDaniel, Devon Kennard, Shep, Vontaze Burfict, Andre Debose, Branden Smith, Mason Walters and the number one player Bryce Brown. Several other haven't lived up to their rankings. I could go through other years and find lots of busts as well.

This years draft only had 4 players go in the first round that were ranked as 5 star recruits. 4 others were had 2 star rankings and several other 3 stars players were 1st round picks as well

So, it’s incumbent on the LSU staff to work these guys out before they have these supposed 5* commit, while maybe sitting in their own backyard (Matheiu) is a jewel. That’s what is really going on with recruiting nowadays. And it seems LSU has done a pretty good job of it.

You mean with perfect 20/20 hindsight?

Interesting that you mention the draft. Go back and look at how many first round picks don't pan out. Those are 21-23 year old players for the most part. Now we are talking about 16-17 year olds.

There are usually only about 30 or so 5 stars in each class vs hundreds of 4,3 and 2 stars, so naturally more of the lower ranked guys will be drafted.

Its not meant as a 100% guaranteed prediction of future success. Just a measure of where a player is at a certain time. Any 1 5* has a better shot at becoming a star than any 1 3 star. That doesn't mean all will. A lot will determine if a player develops into a star including his work ethic, coaching, injuries etc.

I can't argue with you. If you think they should be predicting 70-80% of 18 year olds (at the peak of puberty) then believe what you want.

Personally, I think the success rate they have is pretty damn good considering all the factors including intelligence and behavior.

I'm not taking up for the services, but they do what they can with what they have. Yes, they cater to some audiences, but that's how they make money. So, we'll agree to disagree.
